Can cloud computing survive the hype? As the buzz surrounding cloud computing gets ever louder, how can customers locate the signal amidst the noise?  In this presentation, Lew Moorman of Rackspace begins by addressing the hype. ”I think everyone is tired of the cloud,” says Moorman, President, Cloud and Chief Strategy Officer at Rackspace. “I think there’s some cloud fatigue going on. Some people are attaching cloud to their brand and services where it doesn’t belong. But I think it is absolutely the new reality, and here’s why: It’s cheaper, better and more reliable.” This video runs about 9 minutes.

Posted by admin On December - 7 - 2009 ADD COMMENTS

At the Gartner Data Center Conference we spoke with Pete Van Deventer, the president and CEO of SynapSense Corp., which makes wireless monitoring products that help data center operators measure the environment and optimize their facilities for energy efficiency. Van Deventer discusses the market for wireless monitoring, how it may be impacted by new carbon regulations, and SynapSense’s development of technology to use monitoring tools to automate the management of data center cooling. This video runs about 7 minutes, 45 seconds.

Video Tour: IBM’s Green Syracuse Data Center

Posted by Blogger On December - 3 - 2009 ADD COMMENTS

IBM and Syracuse University today celebrated the construction of a new Green Data Center (GDC) designed to showcase multiple energy-saving technologies. The $12.4 million, 12,000-square-foot data center will feature on-site power generation, DC power distribution, chillers and cabinets equipped with water-cooled rear-door heat exchangers. Syracuse University will use the data center for its IT equipment, and also provide detailed analysis of its energy efficiency. IBM has supplied $5 million in electrical co-generation equipment and servers, and use the facility to showcase its “green” data center technology. The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) is contributing $2 million to the project. This video tour is guided by Chris Sedore, VP IT & CIO, Syracuse University and Ez Khalifa, Professor of Engineering, Syracuse University.

DealNews: Handling Black Friday Traffic Spikes

Posted by admin On November - 27 - 2009 ADD COMMENTS

The motto for retail bargain-tracker site Dealnews.com says it all: “Where every day is Black Friday.” As a specialist in sales and discounts, Dealnews manages enormous traffic spikes every Christmas season, which scales up in earnest on Black Friday and Cyber Monday (the Friday and Monday after Thanksgiving, respectively). In this presentation from O’Reilly’s Velocity 09 conference, Brian Moon of DealNews discusses ways to manage both seasonal traffic peaks and spikes from unexpected events. Moon discusses “planned degradation” in which non-essential features can be turned off to reduce server load, as well as caching strategies for peak loads. He also discusses how to adapt to the loss of a data center (21 minute mark) and content delivery network, and the performance impact of content from third-party servers. This video runs about 27 minutes. Brian’s presentation is also available from the Velocity 09 web site.

UK data center services provider Telecity Group operates eight data centres in the London market offering more than 24,000 square meters of customer space. The newest of these is Telecity’s Powergate data center, which offers 5,000 square metres of customer space and 10 megawatts (MW) of power capacity. The data centre, which opened in 2008, has been designed to provide 4 kilowatts (kW) of customer power per rack as standard, with high density zones offering up to 20 kW per rack. The faciloity is supported by 12 diesel backup generators. Here’s a 5 minute video tour:

Raging Wire: A More Efficient Colo Environment

Posted by Blogger On November - 23 - 2009 ADD COMMENTS

Improving a data center’s energy efficiency can be tricky in a colocation center filled with customers. At the recent Data Center Energy Efficiency Summit sponsored by the Silicon Valley Leadership Group, Jim Kennedy of RagingWire Enterprise Solutions presented a case study detailing an efficiency project at the company’s 200,000 square foot colocation facility in Sacramento. RagingWire installed a wireless sensor system from SynapSense, which it used to monitor conditions as it raised its data center temperature, which in turn enabled savings in the cooling system. Kennedy said RagingWire expects the measures to save the company 2.1 million kilowatt hours a year on its electricity bill. This video runs about 11 minutes, and the slides and presentation are available at the SVLG web site.

SWAT Team 1, Servers 0

Posted by Blogger On November - 20 - 2009 ADD COMMENTS

There are many ways a server can expire, taking your precious data with it. Most of these failures don’t provide the visual evidence of catastrophe that would be useful in, say, marketing videos for data protection providers. The folks at KeepGoing.biz, a business continuity firm in the Dallas area, wanted to give customers a visceral sense of what a catastrophic data loss might look like. Since it’s hard to simulate a meteor strike for a YouTube video, they opted to have a group of heavily-armed guys shoot the dickens out a server cabinet. Whatever this server’s sins may be, we’re certain it’s quite dead in the opening moments of this encounter. These guys continue killing it anyway. Here’s two minutes of infotainment for a Friday afternoon.

Inside Bay Area’s New Santa Clara Site

Posted by Blogger On November - 20 - 2009 ADD COMMENTS

Bay Area Internet Solutions has built a new 80,000 square foot data center in Santa Clara, Calif. that features an innovative economizer design. One end of the data center is lined with more than 200 fans to bring fresh air into an exterior “air corridor” that surrounds the data center. The air is then filtered and used in the facility’s cooling system. Bay Area Internet expects to be able to use the air economizers to provide free cooling for 85 percent of the year. This video was produced by Emerson Network Power and features its products, but also provides an inside look at an interesting new facility in the active Silicon Valley market. This video tour runs about 6 minutes 30 seconds.
